Three vans dominate the Italian 2.5–3.5 t segment: Fiat Ducato, Renault Master and Mercedes Sprinter. They are also the most common vehicles among logistics and last-mile companies that from 1 July 2026 must install the second-generation smart tachograph (G2V2) on vehicles used in international transport or cabotage.
The questions we receive most often from fleet managers and SME owners: how much does it really cost to upgrade a Ducato? Are there technical differences between the three brands? Are workshops the same for all? In this article we bring together the available market data, realistic cost ranges and model-specific considerations. For the general picture of the obligation see the operational guide to the tachograph for 2.5–3.5 t vans; for the technical detail on the G2V2 and driver cards see the dedicated article on hardware and driver card.
Premise: the G2V2 is standard hardware, but with margins of variability
The G2V2 device is certified at European level under Regulation (EU) 165/2014: tachograph functionality is the same on all vans. There are few approved device manufacturers in Italy (Continental with DTCO, Stoneridge, Intellic), and each authorised workshop chooses its own reference supplier.
Differences in cost and installation time depend on three factors that vary by model and version:
- Accessibility of the mounting area: where the vehicle unit (VU) goes and how the transmission group is reached for the motion sensor.
- Wiring and electronic integration: OBD socket, CAN bus, any control unit pre-wired by the OEM.
- Factory pre-fitment: some recently registered vans are already pre-wired for the G2V2 (at the factory), which reduces installation time.
The prices we report here are indicative market ranges, collected from a sample of real quotes from authorised workshops in northern, central and southern Italy in March-May 2026. Final prices can vary significantly depending on province, workshop and device supplier: always request two or three quotes before committing.
Tachograph on Fiat Ducato (3rd series, 2014-2025)
The Ducato 3rd series (X290) is the most common van in Italy in the 2.5–3.5 t segment. The 3rd series has been in production since 2014 with facelifts in 2021 and 2024.
Versions affected by the obligation
All versions with MAM above 2.5 tonnes, identifiable from the registration document. In practice:
- Van 33 trims (33 quintals = 3.3 t MAM): subject.
- Van 35 trims (3.5 t MAM): subject.
- Van 30 trims (3.0 t MAM): subject.
- Van 28 trims (2.8 t MAM): subject.
- “Maxi” versions with MAM 4.0+ t: already in the tachograph regime before 1 July 2026.
Indicative installation cost 2026
Market range: €1,400-2,200 + VAT for first installation on an unequipped vehicle. Northern workshops tend to be at the upper end of the range; in the South we have seen some quotes around €1,300. The cost includes device, labour, seals and certificate of first calibration.
Biennial calibration: €150-200 + VAT.
Subsequent replacement (if the device fails or is replaced for firmware upgrade): €350-600 + VAT.
Typical installation times
Half a day in the workshop (3-4 hours of actual work). The Ducato 3rd series has the VU mounting area easily accessible above the dashboard and the motion sensor installs quickly on the gearbox group.
Specific considerations
- Post-facelift 2021 versions have a factory telematics system (Fiat Connect) that does not interfere with the G2V2: ITS integration with third-party fleet management software remains possible, but it is advisable to ask the workshop to verify the compatibility of the chosen G2V2 device supplier with the vehicle’s control unit.
- Post-2024 versions have a slightly differently configured CAN bus: some workshops require a firmware update of the device for correct speed and odometer reading.
What to ask the workshop
Certificate of first calibration with date, numbered seals and detailed invoice separating the device (with brand and model) from labour. Keep these documents for roadside checks and audits.
Tachograph on Renault Master (3rd generation)
The Master 3rd generation has been in production since 2010 with facelifts in 2014, 2019 and 2024 (this new generation, “Master IV”, is coming during 2026 but in May 2026 most installed vehicles are still mainly 3rd generation).
Versions affected by the obligation
All versions with MAM >2.5 t. In particular:
- Master L1/L2/L3/L4 with 3.3 or 3.5 t MAM: subject.
- Master Propulsion (chassis cab): subject if MAM >2.5 t.
- “Mid” versions with 2.8 t MAM: subject.
Indicative installation cost 2026
Market range: €1,500-2,400 + VAT for first installation. The Master is slightly more expensive than the Ducato because some workshops report greater complexity in the Renault CAN bus wiring, especially on versions equipped with integrated R-LINK multimedia system.
Biennial calibration: €150-200 + VAT (same range as the Ducato).
Typical installation times
Half to one day in the workshop. Versions with more advanced electronics require slightly longer times to verify CAN bus signal compatibility.
Specific considerations
- R-LINK and integration: versions equipped with the Renault R-LINK multimedia system may require specific configuration to avoid conflicts with the G2V2 device. Check with the workshop that they use a device tested on your exact version.
- Master ZE electric: the electric version of the Master has a different power management ECU. Not all workshops are equipped to install the G2V2 on electric Masters: look for specific workshops with BEV experience.
What to ask the workshop
Same documents as the Ducato. Additionally, if you have an R-LINK installed, ask for explicit verification that the G2V2 device does not interfere with the GPS reading of the original Renault telematics.
Tachograph on Mercedes Sprinter (W907, 2018+)
The Mercedes Sprinter 3rd generation (code W907, in production since 2018) is the 2.5–3.5 t van with the greatest variety of technical trims. Mercedes is also historically the manufacturer with the most experience in the tachograph world (DTCO Continental is the most common device on Sprinters).
Versions affected by the obligation
All versions with MAM >2.5 t. The range includes:
- Sprinter 311/313/314/316 CDI with 3.5 t MAM: subject.
- Sprinter 211/213 CDI with 2.8-3.0 t MAM: subject.
- “Maxi” Sprinter with 4.1 or 5.0 t MAM: already in the tachograph regime.
- eSprinter electric: same logic as combustion, installation is slightly faster thanks to more modern electronic pre-fitment.
Indicative installation cost 2026
Market range: €1,500-2,300 + VAT for first installation.
An important consideration: a significant portion of Sprinters sold in Italy from 2022 onwards is already pre-wired for the DTCO Continental at the factory, even if not fitted with the device. For these vehicles installation is faster and cheaper (typical range €900-1,400 + VAT, to be verified at the dealership). Ask the original dealership whether your Sprinter has G2V2 pre-fitment.
Biennial calibration: €150-200 + VAT.
Typical installation times
3-4 hours if the vehicle is pre-wired, 5-6 hours if full wiring needs to be done.
Specific considerations
- DTCO Continental: the Sprinter is the most “natural” van for the DTCO Continental, the most common G2V2 device. Compatibility is standard in recent versions.
- Mercedes Pro Connect: the original Mercedes telematics system can be kept in parallel with the tachograph. For data integration with third-party fleet management software, the ITS interface is the most direct route.
What to ask the workshop or dealership
Explicit verification of G2V2 pre-fitment from the VIN number. If pre-fitment is there, the quote must reflect the wiring saving.
What does not change between the three models
Some cost and procedure items are independent of the van model:
- Driver card: about €40 (€37 fees + expenses), 5-year validity, one per driver. Requested at the Chamber of Commerce.
- Company card: same cost as the driver card, 5-year validity, at least 2 in the company (for backup).
- Biennial calibration: €150-200 + VAT, mandatory every 2 years from first installation.
- Data download obligations: 28 days from the driver card, 90 days from the vehicle memory.
- Workshops: only those authorised by the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy can install and calibrate. The official list is available on the Ministry portal.
How to choose the right workshop
In May 2026, with the deadline at 6-7 weeks, authorised workshop capacity is saturating in many Italian provinces. To choose well:
- Verify MIT authorisation: the workshop must be on the ministerial list. Be wary of installation offers at anomalous prices outside the market range.
- Request 2-3 quotes: price variability is significant even within the same province.
- Ask for real availability: some workshops accept bookings but then shift appointments. Demand a firm date with advance payment (if the workshop is serious).
- Check experience on your model: workshops with specific experience on your van have faster and less problematic installations.
- Ask for the certificate of first calibration and seals: these documents must be kept by the company. Without them the vehicle is not compliant even if the device is physically installed.

In summary
- G2V2 installation on Ducato, Master and Sprinter has an indicative market cost between €1,400 and €2,400 + VAT per non-prewired vehicle.
- The recent Sprinter can be factory pre-wired: in that case installation costs less (€900-1,400 + VAT).
- Differences between the three models are minor: mounting accessibility (Ducato slightly faster), CAN bus (Master requires attention on R-LINK versions), factory pre-fitment (Sprinter often pre-wired).
- At 6-7 weeks from the deadline, the capacity of authorised workshops is the real bottleneck. Book now.
- Cost items unrelated to the model (driver cards, calibration, driver training) are the same for all.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to upgrade 10 Ducato 3.3 t in a fleet?
Indicative range €14,000-22,000 + VAT for the G2V2 installation alone. To this add €400 for driver cards (10 drivers) and €80 for company cards, plus driver training (half a day per driver). Total cost is between €16,000 and €25,000 before the first biennial calibrations.
Can I negotiate a cumulative quote with a workshop for multiple vehicles?
Yes, many workshops apply volume discounts for multiple installations. In May 2026 the negotiation margin is reduced due to saturation, but a 5-10% discount is still achievable for packages of 5+ vehicles.
Is my 2015 Ducato still installable or do I need to change vehicle?
Yes, the 2015 Ducato 3rd series is installable without problems. Vehicle age is not a factor: the only requirement is that the motion sensor is compatible with the chosen G2V2 device, a condition that workshops verify at the quotation stage.
Does the electric Sprinter (eSprinter) have specific constraints?
The eSprinter works the same way from a tachograph perspective, but not all workshops are equipped for interventions on BEV vehicles. Look for a workshop with specific experience on electric vehicles: final cost can be aligned (or slightly higher by €100-200) with the combustion version.
Can I install the G2V2 myself or with a generic mechanic?
No. By law, installation, calibration and sealing of the tachograph can only be performed by a workshop authorised by the Ministry of Enterprise and Made in Italy. Unauthorised installation is treated as tampering and carries penalties of up to €31,200.
Can the biennial calibration be done by a different workshop from the one that installed?
Yes, any authorised workshop can perform the biennial calibration. It often makes sense to choose a workshop close to the operational site to reduce vehicle downtime during the check.
